Drones can assist crime scene investigation in a variety of ways. They are used to collect evidence that may be difficult to reach from eye level. Two drones can survey a crime scene and provide maps and 3D images within minutes. Fire departments have been seeing large benefits from the use of drones during structure fires and search and rescue missions. In the case of a structure fire, when first arriving on the scene, the drone can be deployed to assess the scene, before the firefighters are put in harms way.

The thermal camera can then allow operators to monitor crew members and conditions, improving efficiency and safety. Report Finds Commercial Drone Fleet Grew by 39% in 2019

From 2018 to 2019, the commercial drone fleet* in the U.S. grew by 39%, an amount that David Benowitz of Drone Analyst says is “relatively high.” Although 39% is impressive, it does represent a significant decline—for a few years running now, the commercial drone fleet has seen an incredible growth rate of 100% every year.

That being said, a 39% growth rate for the commercial drone fleet far exceeds the FAA’s forecasts from their 2017-2018 annual report. That report projected that the commercial drone fleet would triple by 2023, with an average annual growth rate of 24.7%—which makes 39% look pretty darn impressive.

Delivering the Future of Farming

Something unusual is happening on farms in the small Central American nation of El Salvador. Many fields, mainly of sugar cane, are now being tended by drones. Large unmanned hexacopters fitted with 20-litre tanks for carrying fertiliser or pesticides follow pre-mapped routes and spray crops accordingly. This isn’t a case of new tech replacing old farm equipment – some of these fields are being sprayed for the very first time. “We’re spraying crops that previously have not being sprayed,” says Nick Nawratil, chief operating officer of Hylio, the firm behind the trial.
